Concealing the faults of fellow Muslims is highly emphasized in Islam as an act of kindness, compassion, and brotherhood/sisterhood.
Ibn Abbās (رضي الله عنه) that the prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever conceals the faults of his Muslim brother, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever exposes the faults of his Muslim brother, Allah will expose his faults even by revealing those he committed in (the privacy of) his home.” [Recorded by Ibn Mājah (no. 2546) and al-Albānī said it is authentic in “Sahih Sunan Ibn Mājah” (no. 2063)]
Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) said: "Concealing the sin of a person may be an ordainment and praiseworthy, and it may be forbidden. If we see a person committing a sin, and he is a wicked man who is indulging in sin, and concealing his sin will only increase his evil and wrongdoing, then we do not conceal him; rather, we report him so that he will be deterred; a deterrence that will achieve the objective."
By concealing the faults of fellow Muslims and treating them with kindness, respect, and compassion, we uphold the principles of brotherhood/sisterhood and strengthen the bonds of unity within the Muslim community. Here are some ways to conceal the faults of fellow Muslims:
1. Avoid Gossip and Backbiting: Refrain from discussing the faults or shortcomings of others behind their backs. Gossip and backbiting are forbidden in Islam and can cause harm to individuals and relationships.
2. Focus on Their Good Qualities: Instead of dwelling on someone's faults, focus on their positive qualities and virtues. Encourage others to see the good in people and to refrain from passing judgment based on hearsay or rumors.
3. Speak Kindly of Others: Whenever the topic of conversation turns to someone's faults, steer the discussion in a positive direction by speaking kindly of them and highlighting their good deeds and character traits.
4. Offer Advice Privately: If you feel compelled to address someone's faults, do so in a private and compassionate manner. Offer constructive criticism and advice with the intention of helping them improve, rather than humiliating or shaming them.
5. Pray for Them: Make dua (supplication) for the person whose faults you are aware of, asking Allah to guide them, protect them from harm, and grant them success in overcoming their weaknesses.
6. Maintain Trust and Confidentiality: If someone confides in you about their faults or shortcomings, honor their trust and keep the information confidential. Avoid spreading rumors or disclosing private matters without their consent.
7. Remember Your Own Imperfections: Reflect on your own faults and imperfections, recognizing that no one is perfect. Treat others with the same compassion and forgiveness that you would want for yourself.
8. Forgive and Overlook: Practice forgiveness and overlook minor faults or mistakes, especially if they do not harm others or violate Islamic principles. Show empathy and understanding towards those who may struggle with certain behaviors or habits.
All praise is due to Allah we ask Him to bless the Prophet Sallah Llah Alei Wasalam and the companions and let us die on the path of Qur'an and Sunnah.
