Self-reflection and taking account of ourselves during Ramadan are essential practices that help us assess our actions, behaviors, and spiritual growth. Here are some steps to effectively engage in self-reflection during this blessed month:
1. Allocate Time for Reflection: Set aside dedicated time each day for self-reflection, preferably during the quieter moments of the day such as before Suhoor, after Fajr prayer, or during the last third of the night (Tahajjud). Use this time to disconnect from distractions and focus inwardly.
2. Review Daily Actions: Reflect on your actions, behaviors, and interactions throughout the day. Consider whether your actions align with Islamic values and principles. Identify areas where you may have fallen short and contemplate ways to improve.
3. Assess Intentions: Evaluate your intentions behind your actions and deeds. Ask yourself whether your intentions are sincere and solely for the sake of pleasing Allah or if they are influenced by worldly desires, ego, or seeking approval from others.
4. Gratitude and Appreciation: Reflect on the blessings and favors that Allah has bestowed upon you, both spiritual and material. Express gratitude for these blessings and appreciate the opportunities for growth and self-improvement that Ramadan presents.
5. Seek Guidance from Quran and Sunnah: Turn to the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for guidance and inspiration. Reflect on relevant verses and hadiths that address topics such as self-discipline, patience, sincerity, and humility.
6. Prayer and Supplication: Finally, turn to Allah in prayer and supplication, asking Him for guidance, strength, and steadfastness in your journey of self-reflection and spiritual growth. Trust in His mercy and seek His help in overcoming challenges and obstacles along the way.
By engaging in regular self-reflection and taking account of ourselves during Ramadan, we can deepen our connection with Allah, enhance our self-awareness, and strive towards becoming better individuals who are more aligned with the teachings of Islam.
Sh. Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān حفظه الله إيمانه said: "We should take account of ourselves over the last ten days that have passed. How did we spend it? Did we preserve them by being obedient of Allāh? And did we benefit from them?
Thus, whoever was proficient [in maximising his benefits] during them and preserved them, upon him is to increase [his efforts] and to complete the remainder or the month [in the same manner that he started it]. And whoever fell short and was lazy during them, upon him is to make tawbah and go capitalise on whatever remains from this month before he misses out on all of it and he does not acquire anything."
